With the beautiful Tanzanian coastline providing the backdrop, Roberto dropped Vitamin U, a collaboration featuring Tanzanian star Vanessa Mdee.
The location gives the video an attractive tropical feel, and the collaboration understandably drew attention from Tanzanian audiences. Vanessa Mdee brings her established presence to the track, making Vitamin U an interesting meeting between the Zambian and Tanzanian music scenes.
Musically, however, it is difficult to place Vitamin U alongside Roberto’s more commanding releases.
It is a cool song accompanied by an equally polished video, but it does not quite carry the energy and instant impact of AmaRulah. That song had a distinctive character that grabbed the audience almost immediately, while Vitamin U feels more relaxed and deliberately smooth.
That does not make it a poor release. If anything, it shows Roberto exploring a softer and more regional sound while working with one of Tanzania’s recognisable female artists.
Vanessa Mdee
Vanessa Hau Mdee, popularly known as Vanessa Mdee, is a Tanzanian recording artist and songwriter who also established herself through television and radio.
Around this period, she was already enjoying considerable recognition across East Africa. Her collaborations and releases helped establish her beyond Tanzania and made her a natural choice for a cross-border collaboration such as Vitamin U.
For Roberto, teaming up with Vanessa Mdee also provided an opportunity to reach further into the East African market.
Vitamin U may not have the explosive character that made AmaRulah stand out, but Roberto and Vanessa Mdee deliver a polished Zambia-Tanzania collaboration with a distinctly East African feel.
